'The architects Billard Leece Partnership have successfully challenged the existing paradigm of the hospital typology to produce a day procedure facility that is filled with natural light and generous space for both patients and staff. The rooms are carefully designed to resist standard hospital detailing providing comfortable accommodation that is more representative of a hotel suite, with small but considered elements such as window seats, good quality bathroom tiles and use of natural timber, which contribute to the sense of the domestic rather than institutional.
External courtyards and strategic views to the tree-lined streets work well to reconnect the residents with the outside world. The functional spaces of the hospital such as operating theatre and recovery room share the architect's attention, with excellent planning, open space and natural light. The large sprawling facility sits well in the suburban context with its controlled palette of brick and timber and site contours have been used to conceal car parking and servicing.'
