The Royal Children’s Hospital Masterplan

BLP were appointed to develop a Masterplan and Development Option based on the Hospital’s service plan.

Following a study BLP in 2002 and a commitment from the Victorian Government to build a new, world class, children’s hospital in Melbourne, BLP were appointed to develop a Masterplan and Development Option based on the Hospital’s service plan. A range of options from a full rebuild of the hospital on a Greenfield site to partial rebuild of the hospital with retention of some or all of the existing buildings were explored.

The evaluation of the options was rigorous, undertaken over a six month period in conjunction with key stakeholders including community groups. The outcome of the evaluation and the conclusion reached by Government and the Hospital was that redevelopment to the west of the existing hospital on an effectively Greenfield site, was the best option. The site provided a real opportunity for a hospital in a park as originally envisioned by Dame Elisabeth Murdoch.
