RMH Ambulatory

Early Masterplanning studies at the Royal Melbourne Hospital identified an urgent need for a cohesive strategy for Ambulatory Care services. This need was fuelled by the need for recurrent cost advantages, improved clinical synergies, and streamlining of patient facilities. The strategy adopted was one of collocation of generic ambulatory care services on the first floor of the hospital, with special services collocated near clinical inpatient units on an as needs/as proven by utilization basis. This strategy has informed a number of projects at the hospital completed in association with redevelopment stages.

Generic components completed to date include Generic Outpatients clinics and centralized booking/reception facility in 1 South, Outpatients Pathology services in 1 South (east), and additional clinics were later collocated in the first floor in a new Infill building between the South and Main blocks. Specialist clinics have also been located on the first floor for Audiology, Maxillofacial and Dentistry, with planning for the fracture clinic to be located on this floor also.

Elsewhere in the hospital, a Pre-admissions Clinic on 3 West was completed, collocated with Day of Surgery admissions. A Day Procedures Centre was constructed on this floor also. A renal dialysis unit was established on the 6th floor to be collocated with a Specialist Medicine Inpatient Unit, Renal Laboratories and research functions. This unit forms part of the North West Dialysis service network of facilities, and is fitted with state-of the art R/O equipment. The unit includes areas for home training for dialysis patients also.
