College Square

Lygon St, Carlton

College Square is a student accommodation development by the Becton Corporation for the University of Melbourne on the corner of Lygon Street and Princes Street in Carlton. It provides quality accommodation in a prime inner city area near to the University. The complex is operated by the YMCA.

The project comprised the redevelopment of existing office buildings, previously occupied by Vic Roads, and the construction of additional new buildings providing a total of 690 apartments, across a range of sizes, and a total of 1060 beds. Additional facilities in the complex include a swimming pool, gymnasium, sauna, multi purpose function room, student lounges, seminar rooms, medical centre, restaurant, laundry facilities and on-site parking for cars and bicycles.

Security for residents was a major consideration in the overall planning of the development. A single entry reception area, linked to a central arrivals court, was designed as part of a new nine-storey central building, which echoes the existing office buildings. New three and four-storey blocks were located on the Lygon Street and Drummond Street frontages to relate to the existing street scale.
