Masterplan and redevelopment of the Caritas Christi Hospice
A masterplan was undertaken for the Sisters of Charity in 2000 to determine the best location for the redevelopment of the existing Hospice on Studley Park Road, Kew. After many options were considered within and outside the site, it was decided that the most practical and suitable option would be to redevelop the Hospice in its existing location.
In summary our recommendations proposed the redevelopment of the existing hospice to provide more accommodation for hospice residents, in mostly single-room accommodation, complete with ensuites for resident privacy.
A day centre and administration building would be retained to provide storage and maintenance areas on the lower level, and the possibility of future low-care accommodation on the upper level. The Convent hostel would be retained in its existing form.
To finance the redevelopment of the hospice and administration areas we proposed the sale of part of the site. The shell of the existing Hospice building remains, with the central roof removed to provide an open-air courtyard within the building.
Most of the existing multi-bed rooms have been converted to single-bed rooms with some bedrooms shared between two people. Each bedroom has an ensuite. Direct access is provided from each bedroom to outdoor garden areas, which has been developed on all sides of the Hospice.
Openings were made in the existing brick wall to the west of the building enabling views across existing parkland. New lounge and dining facilities have been provided together with child-friendly areas to allow residents to entertain family and friends.
