Apartments rising from the Great Ocean Road
This development consists of 22 apartments ranging from single-level and two-storey villas with two bedrooms to larger penthouses, apartments of three bedrooms, and two-storey town houses with living areas at the upper floors that add to the diversity and take maximum advantage of the views from the site.
A long and narrow site on the brow of the hill, it rises from the Great Ocean Road enjoying excellent solar access to the north and east and impressive views out to sea to the east, towards the pier and across Loutit Bay to the north. Considerable effort has been made to ensure sharing of the spectacular views from the site, over and around it. The building form is broken at one point to open up a view cone from street level. The building’s corners on each side of this break have also been setback to increase the view cone from the street.
One of the main architectural objectives was to ensure that the buildings did not present a bulky monolithic appearance from Armytage Street or other public vantage points along the Great Ocean Road or the Pier. The development has been broken into two buildings with the north building stepped. Lorne’s vibrant architecture, distinctive to the Surf Coast aesthetic, is reflected in the general scale and character of the development. Materials vary to modulate the form of the building and enhance its articulation. The upper floor is clad in recycled hardwood and the base rendered blockwork or ecoply. Native vegetation has been reinstated.
