Salutogenic Design in New Health Quarter
As part of the New Epping Health Quarter, Northern Private Hospital is a $133 million purpose-built facility pioneering Australia’s first “quiet hospital” model. Serving one of Victoria’s fastest-growing populations, this 4 Star Green Star-rated hospital redefines healthcare architecture through salutogenic design, where every element actively supports recovery, reduces stress, and fosters wellbeing.
The hospital is located next to the established 500-bed Northern Hospital and Northern Centre for Health, Education, and Research, as part of an emerging Epping Health and Knowledge Precinct. A link bridge will be built to connect the private and public hospitals for easier access between the two facilities, ensuring that patients have access to a wide range of services.
The precinct will include extensive open space and conservation areas, through high amenity streets and pathway networks. It is designed as “hospital of the future” to reflect the aspirations and contemporary approaches to wellness in a healthcare environment.
Northern Private Hospital pioneered the latest digital devices for patient safety and quality, including a new communication system making it Victoria’s first “quiet hospital”. Biophilic interventions include a dramatic double-height living green wall and therapeutic sensory gardens that reconnect patients with nature.
With a 4 Star Green Star Rating, the hospital emphasises environmental sustainability. The building was built using cooling beams and features solar panels, LED efficient lighting and double-glazed windows. This commitment to sustainability positions the Northern Private Hospital as a leader in sustainable healthcare.
The Northern Private Hospital will open in two stages, the first stage was completed in 2023 and the second stage forecast to open in 2027.
